Mission

Our mission is to create world change through education.

Our plan of action is twofold:

1) Establish educational facilities in developing countries

We raise funds to build schools, libraries, and other educational facilities in developing countries. All proceeds are donated to the internationally renowned charity, Room to Read, who works in partnership with local communities to complete the projects. The goal for the academic year of September 2009 to April 2010 is to raise $20,000 towards the construction of one school library in India and the publication of 10,000 copies of a local language children's book.

2) Create challenging and meaningful volunteer opportunities for university students

We ask students who volunteer with us bring their strong work ethic and diverse skills. In return, we offer them opportunities to build teamwork, leadership, and project management skills. Together we achieve substantial results, earn valuable experience, and improve the lives of hundreds of children every year. We make our projects scalable so passionate students can implement them at their universities.

History – Why wouldn’t you build a school in a developing country?

DREAM began in 2005 with a belief that students could change the world by helping other students. We decided the best way to help was to partner with a world renowned charity, Room to Read, to build educational facilities in developing countries. In our first year of operation, this idea brought together 20 students at Queen’s University who initiated Live-in for Literacy, our signature event. Since then, over 60 students have worked to expand the event to six more universities across Canada. We have raised over $70,000 to build 9 school libraries in Nepal, 4 school libraries in India, and a computer lab in Cambodia, which amounts to 5,000 lives enriched every year!
